Third Grade News

Science and Social Studies

Third grade Science and Social Studies units concentrate the Common Core State Standards requirements.  In science, we will cover rocks, glaciers, electricity and magnetism, as well as plant and animal adaptations and biomes.  Students will conduct many experiments, being actively involved in hands-on activities, create and test their own experiments using the Scientific Method and learn to make presentations to the class.

In Social Studies, we will concentrate on map skills, the history of CT and the government of CT.  We will take several field trips this year, including West Wharf Beach and Rockland Preserve.

In both Science and Social Studies, students will learn how to research topics, analyze their new learning and learn how to use various presentation tools such as Google Slideshow, Glogster, WeVideo and Prezi to teach their audience.  A great deal of time will be focused on learning how to work in a cohesive small group, where every child is contributing to the process and product they are creating.  Students will also learn how to present their learning to the whole group.
